Crystal River's Fall Runs Down Citrus Avenue, With Stone Crab Season Behind It

October 29, 2026

Stone crab claws have been legal to harvest in Florida state waters since October 15. Between this Saturday and December 5, four public events will take over the same short stretch of downtown Crystal River, from Citrus Avenue to the Town Square. The one named for the crab falls right in the middle. Taken together, these aren't four separate weekends. They're one season, and in at least one case the organizers have treated it that way, letting vendors carry their money from one event to the next.

Here is the run, in order:

  1. Saturday, October 31: Scarecrow Fest, downtown, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., free
  2. Saturday, November 7: the 19th Stone Crab Jam Music Festival, 610 N. Citrus Ave., noon to 9 p.m.
  3. Friday, December 4: Christmas Tree Lighting Festival, Crystal River Town Square, 5 to 9 p.m.
  4. Saturday, December 5: Chamber Christmas Parade, Citrus Avenue and 3rd Avenue, 6 p.m.

The season behind the calendar

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sets the state-waters stone crab season at October 15 through May 1, closing on May 2. The page lists those dates as a recurring window, so this season runs from October 15, 2026 to May 1, 2027. Traps can go into the water 10 days before opening day, but no one can tend them until the season starts. FWC's page also lists the size limit, bag limits and gear rules for anyone running their own recreational traps.

So by the time Scarecrow Fest sets up on Halloween, the season is barely two weeks old. If you'd rather buy claws than trap them, two Crystal River businesses sell stone crab directly:

A forecast put Scarecrow Fest on Halloween

Scarecrow Fest was supposed to happen a weekend earlier. The Citrus County Chronicle reported that the weather forecast led the city to cancel the original date and move the festival to Saturday, October 31. In the paper's words, "The event now falls on Halloween. Participating vendors are encouraged to bring candy to make the festival extra festive."

The detail that ties the season together came in the same report. Vendors who can't make the new date can put their Scarecrow Fest payment toward the Tree Lighting Festival on December 4 instead. That means a vendor's payment for a Halloween festival can carry over to a Christmas one held five weeks later on the Town Square.

The City of Crystal River's event page lists costumes, games, vendors, food, live music, beer and wine, and fall photo spots. Admission is free, and the event runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Because it ends mid-afternoon, families can do the festival downtown and still be home before trick-or-treating starts in the neighborhood.

November 7 is the one with crab on the menu

One week later, the street reopens for the event named after the season. Kings Bay Rotary Charitable Foundation presents the 19th annual Stone Crab Jam Music Festival, billed as four live bands, "Dancing in the Streets," and an open-container setup in old downtown Crystal River near the bay. The ticket page promises "Delicious Stone Crab!" plus other seafood, food trucks, vendors and sweets.

Advance tickets are sold through Humanitix. With fees, an advance ticket came to $14.28 on the ticket page, so buying ahead saves less than a dollar per adult. Private individuals near the festival also sell parking, and the free high school lot comes with a $2 shuttle.

Where the money goes matters too. According to the festival site, the Kings Bay Rotary Charitable Foundation gave more than $44,000 in 2024-25 to local charities, nonprofits, service organizations, food banks, schools and youth groups. The organizers say all proceeds from this year's Jam go to local charities. The 2026 band lineup and shuttle details are posted on the festival website.

The December weekend that takes those Scarecrow Fest vendor fees

Four weeks after the Jam, downtown hosts two events on back-to-back nights. Friday, December 4 brings the Christmas Tree Lighting Festival to Crystal River Town Square from 5 to 9 p.m. This is the event that picks up any Scarecrow Fest vendors who couldn't move to Halloween, so some of the same tents may show up again.

The next night, Saturday, December 5, the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade steps off at 6 p.m. along Citrus Avenue and 3rd Avenue. One part of the Chamber's own page gives a different start date. The 2026 parade listing on Eventeny confirms Saturday, December 5.

When the parade goes by, stone crab season will be seven weeks old, with almost five months still to go. The festivals end in December, and the claws keep coming in through spring.

Putting a claw run on the calendar

The events and the seafood counters line up in a few easy ways:

  • Halloween weekend: Scarecrow Fest ends at 3 p.m., which leaves the afternoon open for a stop at Charlie's Fish House on NW Hwy 19 if you want claws for dinner. Call first to see what's in.
  • November 7: The festival sells stone crab on site. Park free at Crystal River High School, take the $2 shuttle, and either buy your $12.50 ticket ahead or bring $15 for the gate.
  • December 4 and 5: Two evenings in a row downtown, Town Square on Friday and Citrus Avenue on Saturday. The Crab Plant on NW 5th Street is another place to pick up claws that weekend.
